Book Review: An Unquiet Mind

An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness

Mental illness. You know how much I like psychology books, but books that describe mental illness in such an honest way hit me hard. I can’t say how exhausting yet empowering it was to read about those scary black depressive moods, and the Dr’s mixed feelings about the blinding white manias.

This is difficult book to review.

2016 is drawing to an end and people in our region still treat people suffering from mental illness in one of two ways:
1- they’re just “crazy”. Ignore them.
2- they’re seeking attention. If they don’t have any physical illness, they just need to suck it up and pull themselves together.

Therefore, reading how someone could live and succeed while fighting manic-depressive disorder, no less, is very empowering.

Thank you, Dr. Jamison.
